Back of the Envelope Guide: South by Southwest

February 20, 2008 at 2:36 PM | 1 Comment

The Sundance of the Southwest is just over two weeks away, and it's time to get your plans finalized for SXSW. Registration, while pricey, is still available, and you can get a pass to see all the music stuff until Monday, March 10. (It'll "only" cost you $650!)

To get you in the spirit, we've cherry-picked a couple Austin spots worth checking out. SXSW runs from March 7-16.

Where to Stay: Pretty much everything is booked up for the first half of the fest, though you can find rooms at airport properties. Your best bet is to search the official SXSW lodging page. If that doesn't work for you, there's always Craigslist. Who woulda thought you could pay $225 a night to sleep in a garage?!

Where to Golf: Home to the SXSW golf tourney, Circle C Ranch Golf Club is now officially called Grey Rock Golf Club. Whatever the name, the course is dotted with oak trees and has nice wide fairways. You'll wanna bring your best driver, as these are some seriously long links; hole 7 alone is 542 yards. 7401 State Highway 45

Where to Party: The Onion is hosting its festival shenanigans on March 13 at Emo's, a live music haven on Red River. The spot is also hosting the Sixth Street Showdown on March 11, featuring a heap of bands rocking outdoors. 603 Red River

If you've made your fest trip a bit of a girlfriend getaway, you'll get at least a laugh out of a stop at Beauty Bar Austin. An offshoot of the original in NYC, this is the place for martinis and manicures. You'll also find live music and DJs almost every night. 617 East 7th St.

Resource for visitors to Austin, SXSW

Hello.  I've got a new web site that I hope is a great tool for visitors to Austin, TX.  It's called www.TodayinAustin.com.

It's community-based media:  many, many organizations publish events, and we collect them all in feed formats.  You click on the link of what you're interested in, and you're connected directly to the publishing organization.  Or you can add the great iCal calendar events to your personal calendar.

Our iCal events for SXSW include the link to each day's schedule posted on the official SXSW web site.  By adding our SXSW event to your personal calendar, you'll have all the links you need to access the entire day-by-day schedule for all three festivals.

Yes, it has today's fun events and upcoming events, all in feed formats that folks can subscribe to.  It also has Google Maps and Google Transit links which are fantastic to figure out   Austin's major downtown tourist destinations and to get a quick bus itinerary to help you get there, even on the iPhone.  Finally, events are all in RSS feed formats and iCal formats -- which work nicely on mobile web devices.

So, just by bookmarking the right two iPhone pages from my site, you can use your iPhone to know what's happening and how to get there using Google Transit.  Other mobile devices can connect using our alternate options for set-up and subscribing.

Maybe you would include me in your resource list?

    Thanks so much.
