Recession Culture: Skip Museums For Brooklyn's Street Art

Brooklyn was once one of the country's epicenters for gritty, hip-hop centric, subway-enveloping graffiti. Nowadays, the hippest borough is more often cited for street art of the ironic, politically-charged, direct-to-gallery variety.

But there's no reason why these two species shouldn’t get along, and offManhattan has compiled a self-guided walking tour that highlights Brooklyn's best graffiti art. While it's confined to the fully gentrified 'hood of North Williamsburg, the tour does a good job of highlighting both storefront pieces from old-skool taggers like T.Kid as well as the newer variety of art like wheat-pasted murals of Obama.

The compilation is a pretty great time-killing tool if you're stuck in the office today, but it also includes a nicely set-up map mashup, in case you want to get out there in the cold and walk it yourself. No charge!
