Do You Dare Dead Zone Travel?
The dead zone of travel is the lowly populated travel period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. David Landsel is the first travel blogger we saw dub this period as such and the moniker really fits.
Today we arrived at BOS before 7 AM on a Monday, a time usually flooded with business and leisure travelers. However, we were met with small lines and little resistance at security. When we arrived inside T5 at JFK the dead zone theory became reality -- see "from the wild" photo above. T5 was so quiet you could hear a ____ (fill in your own hackneyed expression here).
What does all this mean? We have stumbled upon the absolutely perfect time to travel. Sure there is shopping to be done and preparations to be made, but couple the dead zone with the recession and you might have a once in a lifetime chance to travel somewhere you couldn't even dream of affording months ago.
A midweek jaunt from JFK to MCO (Orlando)? $178 round trip next week. Boston to Aruba next week? $358/rt. Both of these prices are on JetBlue, but there are plenty of deals to be had out there.
On the West Coast, a Las Vegas quickie can be done by booking a Southwest flight for $69 each way on Dec. 19th returning Dec. 21st. Hit up the Las Vegas Hilton for $58 a night or splurge for strip action at the MGM Grand for $90 a night (both rates listed on Expedia.) See? If you can swing a mini-vacation during the next two weeks, you can do so at a significant discount.
So what is the verdict -- anyone doing any dead zone travel, or is it all just wishful surfing out there? Let us know here.
