Hanging out near Patong Beach ensures inflated prices, hordes of travelers and salesmen on the street offering “very strong drinks” at the bar they’re plugging. If you’re into the party scene, go for it.
For others, Phuket offers so, so much more. On the northwestern and southeastern shores, there are enormous, relatively uncrowded stretches of beach with wide tidal fields that provide room to spread out, play Frisbee or venture out to sea. The ubiquitous Thai songtaews--blue pick-up trucks with benches for sitting in the back--are the cheapest way to traverse the island. Trips most places except the airport cost no more than 40 Baht, or a little more than $1.
Further, we’re glad most people dismiss the idea of staying away from the beach in quiet, charming, Phuket Town. There, hip Thai professionals fill trendy cafes and pubs, where live music is on nightly. There’s also a fabulous spot around the corner from all the main hostels, called Siam Bakery. Twenty Baht buys you a warm, flaky croissant baked fresh daily by the French pastry chef.
Those still jonesing for their Leo DiCaprio fix can check into the On On Hotel right in town, where “The Beach”’s depraved Bangkok hostel scenes were filmed. The outside is charming but the interior resembles an establishment that Norman Bates and his mother might manage. Still, it holds pop culture appeal and has undeniable character--if you like that mid-century mental hospital feel.
