I Wish They All Could Be California Girls

Last night was the premiere of "The City," MTV's latest spinoff of "Laguna Beach" featuring "Hills" co-star Whitney Port in the big, bad city of New York. Since "The Hills"' season finale was last week, this was what we had to work with. Was it fantastic? No, but at least it's promising.

Whitney arrived at her new job at Diane von Furstenberg in full Fashion Week--disbelief, suspended!--with so much to do and a snobby new costar, Olivia to contend with. (That's Olivia Palermo, socialite best known previously for wearing headbands inappropriately and working on a never-completed documentary about human trafficking. Yet she's a PR maven now?) In Part I of last night's Citystravaganza, Whitney survived the DVF fashion show and managed to score an invite for herself and Aussie love interest Jay to Olivia's TriBeCa dinner party. But Jay wouldn't go--WTF?--so she brought new, bangtastic roommate Erin. (That is, she has great bangs. What did you think we meant?)

In Part II, Whitney had breakfast with old flame Alex--the model her former boss Kelly Cutrone set her up with (while acknowledging she doesn't have great taste in men)--and Alex warned her that Jay was alternating her with some other lady while she still lived in LA. Then Alex and Jay had an incredibly confusing confrontation at Tenjune, the kind of club where Jeremy Piven can still pull chicks, where Alex told Jay not to mess with sweet, innocent West Coast Whitney and Jay just shrugged and smiled. OK then! Whitney then went to see Kelly, who told her she could always count on her for advice.

So... not the most thrilling episode of television we've ever experienced, but we hope to see more of New York--especially celebrity New York, provided in tantalizing glimpses here with Molly Sims, Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson as well as Olivia's "close friend" Manolo Blahnik.

yesssssss

I am not embarrassed to admit that I can't wait to watch this (I don't have cable so it's internet-only for me). I'm incredibly confused by the pretend working at DVF though. If she doesn't work, what does she do all day?
