Five Resorts Already Worth Visiting

December 26, 2008 at 4:30 PM | by pbb | 1 Comment

With Thanksgiving, holiday parties and family commitments all piling up at the end of the year, we usually don't get a chance to strap on our skis and boards until well into January. But while snow's been causing airport hell lately, it's also been dumping on resorts across North America. So in honor of a sleepy week coming up--and those vacation days you still haven't used--here are five places worth checking out before the new year rolls around.

Park City Mountain Resort:
After a slow start, 31 inches of fresh snow have fallen on PCMR in the past three days. Three terrain parks are already open, as is a half pipe, and most lifts are operating. (And we loved snowboarding there while we were at Sundance.) A three-day pass is $255 ($85 a day), but you can get up the hill right from downtown Park City on the appropriately named Town Lift.

Mammoth Mountain:
Mammoth got hit by a snowstorm over Christmas, adding 34 inches of fresh powder to an already sturdy 64-inch base. The seven rightly famous terrain parks are open, as are most lifts. Advance-purchase three-day tickets are $201, but if you can't get to Mammoth until 2009, a mid-week pass for unlimited skiing in January is just $199.

Snow King Resort:
The other place to ride in Jackson Hole, Snow King has awesome stay-and-ski packages for $102 a night. That's for both your hotel and your lift ticket, though you won't be able to ride at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Still, there's no monopoly on snow: Snow King's had two feet of new powder in the past three days.

Whistler Blackcomb:
True, a gondola just fell off its tower, but that means they've double checked every other lift for safety! And as Peter Greenberg's blog points out, you can get a Canadian dollar for just 82 cents, meaning Whistler's $85 lift ticket is actually just $70. True, there isn't too much snow just yet, but forecasts call for as much as a foot of new accumulation by Sunday night.

Sipapu Ski Resort:
The New York Times tipped us off to Sipapu, which has been open since November 15, thanks to early snow and cold temperatures. Just 20 miles from Taos, it has 41 trails open right now, and lift tickets go for just $39. If you're really hard-core, you can get a campsite at the resort for free when you buy a full-price lift ticket. Bring a warm tent!
