DC Metro Not Shy About Cashing In On Obama

December 22, 2008 at 3:09 PM | by pbb | 1 Comment

Break out the plastic, Obamaniacs! For just $20, the DC Metro will sell you $10 worth of subway rides on a special limited edition fare card featuring a photo of future President Barack Obama!

That's right: In honor of the 44th president--and all the tourists coming to town--the DC Metro is churning out souvenir tickets and making bank. You can pre-order online, and we recommend immediately listing your newly acquired pass on eBay where it will most likely fetch even more than 20 bucks by the time January 20 rolls around.

Meanwhile, try to forget that a one-day pass with unlimited rides usually costs just $7.80--or that a $10 fare card usually costs, you know, 10 bucks. But cheapskates be warned: During inauguration week, Metro is charging rush hour rates all day and your ordinary $7.80 day pass will only work after 9:30 am.

History: Worth paying for!

    Metro mark-up

Ah yes, the ordinary plastic SmartTrip card, the one without the pres-elect's smiling face, costs only $5.00, so you can buy that instead and save $5.00, and you need one to park in any Metro parking lot (you can't pay with cash at the lot exit). The plastic card gets you through the turnstiles much faster, and they won't get bent and soggy like the paper cards. It's a great idea to buy them early online so you don't have to line up for the farecard machines at the stations. Yes, it's too bad Metro's charging extra for the commemorative cards, but anything to support public transit in DC is a good idea in my book, especially since Metro doesn't have dedicated funding from the 3 jurisdictions it travels through.
