Best Of The Craigslist Inauguration Rip Offs (So Far)

December 2, 2008 at 4:00 PM | by pbb | 2 Comments

Our sis site HotelChatter has been chronicling the absurdity of DC-area inauguration hotel packages, so we figured it was time for a look at the outrageous "deals" available on the couch-surfer's best friend, Craigslist. Can the nation count on DC for Obama-themed rip offs? Yes we can:

$8,000 in Tysons Corner, Virginia:
This five-bedroom home actually starts to look like a deal if you figure a couple people per room. What's the catch?

Near Tysons Corner (Barns of Wolftrap) just off Dulles Toll road making DC a 25 minute drive. ... 15 minutes to West Falls Church metro. 25 Minutes to Dulles or Reagan National Airports.

You mean on days that there aren't a couple million extra people milling around DC?

$15,000 in Bethesda, Maryland:
Closer to town than Tysons Corner, this five-bedroom, three-story house is completely kitted out with everything you and nine friends could possibly need for a week. And then there's this:

CAR WITH CHAFFEUR included with home rental--transportation to/from airport, to/from inauguration events, etc.

$5,000 in Tenleytown-AU, DC:
The generous soul offering up a one-bedroom apartment for more than $700 a night wants you to know:

Do NOT be fooled by houses/apts. in Northern Virginia or Maryland, you want to be in DC for this event. ... Watch history made and book your place early b/c prices will just go UP.

$10,000 in Chinatown, DC:
Here's the entire text of this listing, emphasis added:

Luxury 1br in Chinatown/Gallery Place for rent during inauguration 1/16-1/21, instant access to 3 metro lines (red, yellow, green), 10 minute walk to Capitol, includes parking spot. Serious offers only.

$45,000 in Rockville, Maryland:
Amazingly, this one isn't just a rip off because the week-long rental costs about what the average American household makes in a year. Nope, here's what had us worried:

$25,000.00 non-refundable deposit required upon signing agreement with balance due by December 20th 2008. All payments by cash or cashiers check.

We won't be dropping off a Halliburton full of non-sequential bills soon!
