Snowy Seattle Goes Mexican

Where: 1420 12th Ave. [map], Seattle, WA, United States, 98112

There was a time when food snobs wouldn't eat Mexican unless it was on a trip to the DF. You could get by in LA, yes; you'd suffer in New York; anywhere else, it was Taco Bell or nada.

But in the last few years, quality Mexican food has sprawled across the country, and coastal snobs are shocked to find fantastic Mexican eateries everywhere from North Carolina to North Dakota. So while we might have at one point been skeptical of the phrase "Seattle Mexican restaurant," now we're pretty excited, especially about the just-opened Barrio Restaurant in Capitol Hill.

Barrio promises to put a "Northwestern spin" on Mexican classics, which means creative dishes like wild salmon ceviche and agave poached mahi mahi. A cocktail list heavy on smooth reposado tequila also reels us in, and chilaquiles and guacamole till 1 am seals the deal.

    Good Mexican in Seattle

Believe it or not, there are some really good Mexican options here in Seattle, especially south of the city, where there are some great, authentic restaurants in predominantly Hispanic areas. My girlfriend is a native Spanish speaker, and we love to go try these places out. Our favorite Mexican in Seattle is La Carta de Oaxaca
