Who Let The Baby In The Bar?

Sometimes you see an inventive new bar or restaurant trend and you just know it's going to take off and be everywhere soon. Other times, you think "Are these people crazy or just pulling my leg?"

When we heard there was a new, fresh-from-Paris fondue parlor coming to a tiny underground location in Nolita, that was trendy enough for us. But now comes word that La Cave des Fondus, which opened yesterday, also offers bottle service: In baby bottles.

That's right, New York hipsters and trendsetters are now drinking their beer and wine from nipple-topped baby bottles. (And writing about it on Tumblr!) At least it takes care of the spillage issue.

I'm not sold on this

If I want a crazy gimmick with my boozing, I'll play some sort of Lost drinking game come January.

Is this like

the baby-doll dress/ pacifier trend from the early-mid '90s? Because it's about that level of creepiness.

Not Such a New Idea

New Yorkers old enough to have boozed in Alphabet City back in the early- to mid-1990's might remember a bar called Babyland on Avenue A. Not only were drinks served in baby bottles (regular glasses were also available), but patrons lounged around on baby furniture as well. They had business cards (or maybe they were matchbooks) that said "come and play, straight or gay, open every day." Babyland is long gone, but the owner went on to create Beauty Bar, which still packs them in on East 14th Street.
