Despite Poor Earnings, Hawaiian Orders More Planes

November 6, 2008 at 1:45 PM | 0 Comments

Last week, Hawaiian Airlines announced that they’d be acquiring some new Airbus A330-200 jets for delivery in 2011 to speed up their transition to an Airbus fleet in advance of the A350s that will be delivered in 2017. We can only hope that they’ll still go through with upgrading their existing Boeing planes with those sexy winglets.

Just after announcing that they were opening the checkbook for these new planes, the airline's third quarter earnings were down about 70 percent--but at least they reported a profit. In light of all this news, we wanted to take a look and see if Hawaiian is still the ideal carrier for crossing the Pacific.

The authors of the Beat of Hawaii blog offer their opinion on the airline's two levels of service:

In the main cabin I would concur that Hawaiian beats the competition with their level of service and free meals. In the first class cabin, however, Continental is the clear standout as best to Hawaii. The first-class seats on Continental are more comfortable and there’s more privacy. Hawaiian, however, offers a better first-class meal.

One user on TripAdvisor comments on the entertainment offerings in addition to the standard overhead movie:

On most Hawaiian flights you can also rent a digiplayer for about $15 ... It's loaded with movies, sitcoms etc. ... We find it a better value than the movie alone.

Finally, users on Yelp also comment on their recent experiences and it seems that things continue to go well:

I definitely give the airlines kudos for being one of the few airlines left (at least seems this way) to serve full meals on their flights on a nearly five hour flight. I can't get over how most airlines these days only serve beverages and a small cold snack, especially on those long flights!

In economy class, the friendly service from the flight attendants made the experience enjoyable. Leg room was spacious (although I was sitting in row 11 with only the TV screen in front of me).
