Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

November 7, 2008 at 8:30 AM | 0 Comments

There's a kid in everyone that loves animated movies. Come on, when the tiger starts crying big tiger tears, it's hard to not feel bad for him even if he's just some lines on paper, or in the case of DreamWorks, several thousands of dollars worth of highly engineered lines crafted by a computer. Take your favorite kid to see Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa today.

In this sequel to the popular first film of the same name, all the New York Zoo animals find themselves marooned on the island of Madagascar. The penguins (leave it to the suits!) put together a an old crashed plane that gets the gang there--but also gets them stuck. On Madagascar they encounter their ancestors and species relatives for the first time. Voices include Jada Pinkett Smith, Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen and Chris Rock among others.

As this one wasn't really filmed, well, anywhere, we invite you to read on to check out some cool spots in the real Madagascar...

Where to Stay: Hotel Boraha
Just off the northeast coast, you'll find the tiny island of Sainte-Marie and Hotel Boraha, which offers perfect views of Madagascar. Each of the 12 charming villas (with reasonable per night rates) were built with eco-friendly materials and are perched on the lagoon, with touches like hammocks and private porches perfect for the afternoon siesta time. From June until September, thousands of humpback whales migrate north to give birth right off the coast of Sainte-Marie.

Where to Stay: Hotelys
Eat like the locals and head to the nearest "hotely"; many dot the island. Some are walk-up bars and others have tables and chairs but all serve ro, a mixture of herbs and leaves with rice topped with dressings, sauces and spicy seasonings. You can also grab this dish with beef or pork and won't have to spend more than about $2.50. Wash it down with some local Three Horses lager or litchel, an aperitif made from lychees.

What to See: Perinet Reserve
About a three-hour drive from the island's capital city of Antananarivo, the Perinet Reserve is some of the lushest rainforest in the world, and also home to the largest of lemurs, the Indri indri. They're also rumored to be very vocal and project a sound that's a mix between a sirens and wailing that can be heard for miles. They also refuse to breed in captivity, so unfortunately there are only a few hundred left.
