"Bones" Takes On In-Flight Murder

Where: Wuhan, China
November 20, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

Here's one risk we hadn't counted on: We don't normally watch "Bones" but this week your friendly neighborhood anthropologists took on a travel-related case, and boy, is it gross. This is the first episode of "Bones" we've ever watched but we'll go ahead and spoil it for you here.

Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan (David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel) were on their way to Wuhan to check out some prehistoric bodies when they accidentally came across a real one... on the plane! And this passenger didn't fall asleep and never wake up in first class; the flight attendant found the remains in the plane's microwave. Yet another good reason never to buy food on a plane again!

Since the plane's still in American jurisdiction until landing, Dr. Brennan decides to examine the body and crack the case in the four hours they have left before landing, using readily available materials like a knitting needle and denture cream. Turns out the passenger's first class ticket didn't protect her from being murdered: A travel writer at DC Voyager magazine, she just filed a story about pilots with undisclosed DUIs and was off to China to relax when the teenage son of her married lover, who was drunk, shoved her in the oven and cooked her alive for six-and-a-half hours. Booth and Brennan were able to narrow down the suspects because the flight attendant saw the killer had First Class slippers on.

We feel pretty ill now knowing the dangers that await us--in first class even!--but it's hard to believe that the pilot would actually slow down the plane so investigators could have more time. In this era of high fuel prices, there's probably a law. Nor would, as at the end of the episode, an airline send a plane back with only three passengers in it, even if one was a nasty killer.
