Dubai Building Islands, Buying Up Celebrity Souls

In probably the lamest career move since starring in "P.S. I Love You," Hilary Swank is offering up her toothy grin as spokeswoman for the new Aquitania, an island chain in the The World, Dubai’s man-made archipelago.

Swank is one of several celebrities to get in on the Dubai action. It seems developers are hoping to spark our interest by aligning their huge projects with big names. Brad Pitt is designing an 800-room hotel there, and Ernie Els and Tiger Woods both lent their course-designing skills to ritzy residential communities.

Despite the fact that people in the actual world can't afford to pay their mortgages, 60 percent of the 300-plus islands in the faux world, which will be completed 2012, have already been sold for between $15 million and $50 million.

A few months ago, Swank along with Lucy Liu, Christina Aguilera, Kate Walsh and Orlando Bloom all showed up in Los Angeles to help Donald Trump celebrate the announcement of a Trump International Hotel & Tower Dubai. It was only a matter of time before the king of overkill set up shop in the land of overkill.

Hilary! You're too good for this dreck... but we'll still see you play Amelia Earhart next year. After all, she's the most daring lady traveler ever, and you're still a pretty great actress.
