Spookiest Small Towns: Cry Innocent in Salem

October 15, 2008 at 1:33 PM | by ced138 | 0 Comments

Salem is to Halloween what Whoville is to Christmas. Thankfully, only one of these places is fictional. Every October, visitors flood the Massachusetts town for what its tourism board calls "Haunted Happenings."

Between car shows, craft fairs, pet costume competitions, radio station car giveaways and multiple theater productions, it may be difficult to decide on just what to do.

Thankfully, we have an idea...

The reputation of Cry Innocent: The People vs. Bridget Bishop, exceeds the rest. The show starts in the town square, leads to the nearby courthouse and culminates in the audience-turned-jury ruling on whether it believes the supposed witch in question, Ms. Biship, is guilty of loosely-defined misdeeds.

Actors use the real-life courtroom transcripts throughout. The play is produced, directed and funded by Gordon College, a nearby Christian school, and it's performed by current and former students.

Visitor feedback for the show ranges from enthusiastic praise to rabid fandom. One audience member expressed her admiration on a Yahoo blog using more exclamation points than we do on in the average week:

Cry Innocent is the highlight of our Salem visit! Every year it gets better! What integrity; what history! And what a presentation! This year's show was the most informative yet!

We guess that means... Go! The show runs twice daily through Halloween.
