Goddess Travel: Child Deified in Nepal

Where: Nepal
October 9, 2008 at 9:50 AM | by ced138 | 0 Comments

Our three-year-old niece considers herself a goddess. For one, she eats grilled cheese only when it's toasted to the perfect shade of brown. Further, she bluntly asks arriving visitors whether or not they brought her a present.

Still, she's super cute. (We figure it's a survival technique so we don't throttle the little narcissist.) So why is it so unfortunate that a three-year-old girl in Kathmandu, Nepal was declared a child goddess?

Well, her appointment as the living incarnation of the deity Talej started with proving her mettle by spending a night alone surrounded by goat and buffalo carcasses. Sounds damn terrifying at any age. She'll now be put into virtual isolation, taken out only to be wheeled around in a chariot during religious festivals, until her divinity ends at puberty.

Afterward, things usually tend to devolve, ending in spousal abuse or suicide. Naturally, child protection groups are up in arms about it, but this ancient tradition looks like it will proceed as planned.
