Trashy Travel: Cans and Bottles Turned Frequent Flier Miles

When we see men and women trolling the streets, piling discarded bottles and cans into a rusty shopping cart, we tend to feel sympathy. But maybe envy would a more suitable emotion: For one English couple, recycling thousands of bottles and cans at a local supermarket translated to a free business class flight.

The couple, the BBC says, collected items nightly for three months until they had enough points for 36,000 British Airways miles to fly them back to England from Atlanta.

The system worked like this: Holders of the Tesco grocery store club card earn one point for every four items they recycle. Every 250 points at the grocery store equals one British Airways frequent flier mile. Despite the massive volume of recycling required according to that formula, the couple achieved their goal.

And it was easier than they imagined:

"There was enough rubbish out there to fly us to the moon and back," the groom said.
