Are you ready to expand your palate? Put down that steak and look beyond the salad plate at the world's best vegetarian restaurants.

Stumbling into either location of Gobo, it would be easy to mistake it for any of a thousand pan-Asian restaurants which have sprung up in New York. But whether you're in the West Village or the Upper East Side, prepare to be surprised: Gobo takes vegan cuisine to the next level.

It's not that we have anything against great faux-meat; when done well, it's delicious. But items on Gobo's menu, from stir fries to seitan-based main dishes, pack the punch of so many intricate flavors that you may find yourself wondering: Is meat necessary?

Even if we eventually decided to continue to eat hamburgers, we'll remember the odd sweetness of a spinach and orange sauté and the striking ginger marinade featured in several of Gobo's main courses. Take your neighborhood naysayer today.
