In addition to the rough terrain it shares with other notoriously unsafe trails, the highway linking Kandahar and Kabul also includes a fleet of self-appointed traffic cops with one aim: Kill everyone.
Aid workers, Afghans, westerners and probably cows and chickens are all targeted by Taliban and other insurgent fighters on the road.
The US-led coalition has already poured hundreds of millions of dollars into rebuilding Afghanistan's main road--considering it a symbol of progress--but militias continually interrupt the process. Looks like we'll have to postpone that vacation to the Hindu Kush mountains for now.
