Are you ready to expand your palate? Put down that steak and look beyond the salad plate at the world's best vegetarian restaurants.

We'd love to take credit for discovering this San Francisco veggie utopia, but we have to credit tipster Linda Lawrence for writing in about Shangrila Vegetarian Restaurant. Linda writes:

Very unassuming. I especially like the bean curd noodly strips with mustard and fresh or frozen soybeans, spiked with some hot chili paste (from the bottle on the table). They have a very nice rice medley: Brown, red rice and soothing melaleuca tea. Everything on the menu that I have tried so far is very good.

And that's why we love our readers. Linda also mentions the friendly staff at this nearly-vegan joint south of Golden Gate Park in the Sunset District.

Yelp.com reviewers tout the excellent texture of the "meats" and, better yet, menus that ascribe health benefits to particular dishes. Knowledge is tasty!
