Halloween Travel: Philly Gets Scary

October 22, 2008 at 1:00 PM | by | Comment (1)

The City of Brotherly Love becomes the City of Scary when Halloween rolls around. Calling itself "America's Most Hauntingly Historic City," Philly takes scaring visitors to a whole new level with some frightful offerings. Find our faves after the jump.

Head to Eastern State Penitentiary (pictured) for its "Terror Behind the Walls" haunted tour. Eastern State is the nation's oldest prison and is already widely reported to be haunted. Add to that 140 actors and upgraded animatronic props, digital sound effects and Hollywood-quality costumes and makeup and you can bet it's terrifying. The 45-minute tour features the ghosts of insane prisoners and sadistic guards and starts at $20 a person. Tickets ahead of time are a must.

If you're a vampire fan, don't miss the Rosenbach Museum & Library's Dracula Festival kicking off on October 25. Rosenbach staff will give you a hands-on look at Bram Stoker's research notes, outlines and other working papers from his work on the original Dracula. The tour will also be accompanied by Elizabeth Miller, who recently co-annotated and transcribed "Bram Stoker's Notes for Dracula," so you can bet this is the real thing.

If you're more the party type, reserve a spot at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia's Haunted Halloween Bash, where you'll fiesta with the one and only (and absolutely kitschy) Elvira! The hotel's Grand Ballroom is transformed into a Halloween haven, and packages include tickets to the party, as well as a room for the night. Opt for the VIP package and get special seating, an open bar from 9 pm to midnight and hors d'oeuvres.
