Jaunted's Guide to CMJ
If you've noticed a marked increase in New York's already sizeable collegiate and post-collegiate hipster population this week, you're not mistaken: It's CMJ week.
Indie rock's biggest group orgy takes over the island of Manhattan (and slivers of Brooklyn) for the College Music Journal Music Marathon, with hundreds of up-and-coming bands playing all over town. If you've read about a band on a blog this year, they're probably here.
The problem of course, is where the eff to go first. CMJ's own site is maddeningly complex, with no simple rundown of what bands are playing where and when.
So if you're reading this and happen to hold one of those awesome all-show badges--and are too worn out from last night's party at Terminal 5 to figure out where the bands worth seeing are--here are the shows you're really gonna care about:
Wednesday:
· Beach House at (Le) Poisson Rouge, 7 pm
· Deerhoof at Fillmore NY, 8 pm
· Dead Prez at Studio B, 8:30 pm
· Fujiya & Miyaga at Mercury Lounge, 9 pm
Thursday:
· Sam Champion at The Bell House, 7:30 pm
· The Black Hollies at Cake Shop, 8 pm
· Pharoahe Monch at Drom, 9 pm
Friday:
· Soulwax at Fillmore NY, 7 pm
· Jay Reatard at Bowery Ballroom, 8 pm
· Broken Social Scene at Brooklyn Masonic Temple, 8 pm
· Oxford Collapse at Pianos, 9 pm
Saturday:
· Minus the Bear at Webster Hall, 9 pm
· A Place to Bury Strangers at Bowery Ballroom, 9:30 pm
· Plus Coheed and Cambria at Terminal 5 every night.
