China Airlines Flight Hits Turbulence, New Low

Where: Taiwan

Two weeks ago, this Jaunted writer flew from San Francisco to Phnom Penh, Cambodia on China Airlines. Under the impression that international carriers are generally superior to domestics, she felt duped when her stained, rigid seat and minuscule meal made her feel like she was flying to Cleveland via Delta circa 1997.

Then, she heard yesterday that 32 passengers on a China Airlines flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok were injured due to turbulence. Suddenly, she felt grateful to have survived the flight with only a mild case of indigestion and chronic back pain.

About 20 minutes before the Bangkok flight was to land in Suvarnabhumi Airport, the plane hit turbulence. Once it landed safely, the passengers were taken to the local hospital. Of the 147 passengers, 21 were injured. Of the 17 crew members, 11 sustained injuries, including severe spinal damage.

The moral of the story? Though back problems are inevitable on a China Airlines flight, a slipped disk is a blessing. Be thankful, and, next time, fly Cathay Pacific.

    the longest flight ever

I flew China Airlines last year from Anchorage to Taipei and similar, very intense turbulence occured for about 45 minutes. So besides the cramped quarters, terrible food, and absolutely freezing cabin temperatures, we were slightly terrified for our lives while cruising over the middle of the Pacific.
