Spookiest Small Towns: Halloween Capital of the World?

October 23, 2008 at 10:30 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

If there's no other town around to refute their claim, then we just may have to agree that Anoka, Minnesota is in fact the Halloween Capital of the World. Pretty much forever ago (the 1920s!) the town decided that it would welcome Halloween celebrations instead of waking up the next morning to a town full of toilet papered trees and egged cars. It was a success, and the treats, rather than tricks, continue to flow.

Not only do the town-folk celebrate the holiday on the big day, but they also get things cooking a couple weeks in advance. The whole town gets into the celebration with a house-decorating contest.

Carbo-load with some snack-size candy before the town's Anoka Halloween Gray Ghost Run on Saturday, October 25. It's a timed 5K, but for those in it just for fun, feel free to dress in costume for a chance at a prize. Following the race, grab a good seat on the curb for the Grand Day Parade which steps off at 1 pm.

Walking ghost tours of the town are offered nightly throughout October and reveal some of the town's legends--including the rocking chair that rocks itself. The local Knights of Columbus even throw open the doors on their own version of a Haunted House, but if you can't make it, just peep some of their sweet merchandise and grab a T-shirt.
