Exteme Makeover Travel: Disney Theme Park Edition

Next door to Disneyland is Disney's California Adventure. It's been around for awhile, but has really never caught on with tourists--or locals. Critics have often been quick to call-out its shortcomings and criticize where Disney officials cut corners and wasted money.

But Disney flung open the doors on the new preview center at the park this week so everyone could check out what's to come.

A $1 billion makeover will transform the entry plaza into 1920s Hollywood--the Hollywood that Walt Disney lived and worked in. There will be red trolley cars to whisk passengers into the park, and even the main gates will be cleaned up and changed to a more art deco theme to reflect the new vision of the park.

Some of the bigger changes are coming to the Paradise Pier area of the park. Gone will be the tacky appearance of a midway and carnival. Things will be given a Victorian makeover, a new Little Mermaid ride will be created and a nighttime show--World of Color--will take center stage in the lagoon.

The final major addition will be Cars Land. Based on the hit animated flick, the area will add a new major attraction, Radiator Springs Racers, as guests ride around in vehicles themed to historic Route 66 America.

The new preview center will be revamped and updated as changes take place, to ensure that visitors get the most current news on what's coming next. Work will continue well into 2012, when the park will be finally transformed into something that is good enough to sit next to Disneyland.
