Fall Festivals Travel: Goodbye Pumpkin, Hello World Record

October 17, 2008 at 11:00 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

If you aren't excited for Halloween yet, then this just might do the trick. In just two weeks, the World Championship Punkin Chunkin gets underway in Delaware. Running through the holiday weekend, the festival finds a unique way to dispose of those extra pumpkins that weren't luckily enough to be carved.

The gates open each day at 7:30 am so guests can get a look at the latest and greatest in "punkin chunkin" technology. The basic premise is to fire a pumpkin as far as possible across a field. Of course, there are plenty of ways to do it: Air power, centrifugal power, catapult, trebuchet and the old favorite of human power. Kids have their own separate competition.

Admission to the launch pad will set you back $9 a day, but judging from this video, it's well-worth it. Friday night evening brings The Charlie Daniels Band and Randy Owens for even more entertainment. Oh, and this year you may see someone break the one-mile mark: The current record sits at 4,434.28 feet!
