Movie Set Travel: The Secret Life of Bees

October 17, 2008 at 8:40 AM | by | Comments (0)

Based on the hit novel, "The Secret Life of Bees" comes out on the big screen today. It's a bring-your-mother/sister/best friend kind of movie that tells the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens who escapes her abusive father with her caregiver and best friend. The two are taken in by the fiercely independent Boatwright sisters who teach them about beekeeping, honey and what real families are. We can already feel the tears coming on, so be ready.

Dakota Fanning is the star of the show, but it also features Queen Latifah as August Boatwright and Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Paul Bettany, too. There are tons of poignant moments, but it's not exactly action packed.

Lily and Rosaleen escape to a town in South Carolina, but in actuality the film was shot in North Carolina. Read on for some fun things to check out there this fall...

Where to Stay: The Duck Smith House Bed & Breakfast
Located on 50 acres in Seagrove, The Duck Smith was a former tobacco farm built in 1914. Rooms are done in lace and gingham (perfect for girlfriend getaways) and the surrounding area is famous for its handmade pottery: You'll find the North Carolina Pottery Center and the Museum of North Carolina Traditional Pottery nearby.

Where to Eat: Hutch & Harris
Newly opened in downtown Winston-Salem, H & H is a cozy pub-style spot with interesting menu items derived from all over the world like pimento pizza, "covert" spinach (spinach salad) and tres leches cake. It's full of brews and has happy hour specials, too.

What to Do: Hanglide with Kitty Hawk Kites
Head to Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head for gliding lessons amid the area's famous sand dunes. Beginners get a three hour lesson and up to five solo flights each trip. They don't guarantee you'll land on your feet, but the sand's pretty soft.
