Weekend in London: In Search of Curry

October 15, 2008 at 2:15 PM | 0 Comments

London is always a fun fall getaway. The weather's not particularly rainy yet, there's an eager back-to-school atmosphere in the air and, hey, you could run into Gyllenspoon in town if you're lucky.

Yes, the city's ridiculously expensive, but there are ways to do it on the more affordable side (pub beer and avoid Harrod's), and that combined with a UK vs. Kazakhstan soccer match at Wembley, enticed us plenty last weekend.

Something to save up for while in town? An evening at Tamarind Restaurant in the posh Mayfair neighborhood. A major step up in London's Indian cuisine scene, Tamarind is tucked downstairs on Queen Street in a sleekly decorated spot with about 20 tables.

Chef Alfred Pasad grabbed a Michelin star with his menu that has twists on classics like stuffed naan (which we loved with cheese and coriander stems). We also dug into a lovely raita which came with chick peas and fried whole bay leaves.

The lamb was excellent, as was our saag aloo. The waitstaff was lovely, and even warned us when we tried to order more food than we could handle. They said that'd make them not us happy--and it was much appreciated.

Our dessert was a refreshing ice cream made of honey and saffron which wasn't too sweet or overpowering. We'll be back to Tamarind next time we're in town.
