Shopping in Brooklyn: Get Pretty

January 9, 2008 at 3:00 PM | 0 Comments

Brooklyn's winter nights offer the perfect excuse to stay inside and relax--or get pretty. Though New York offers beauty mega-stores like Sephora, Brooklyn's neighborhoods boast a variety of smaller stores that appeal to niche shoppers.

Staying inside doesn't have to mean curling up with a book; make it a bit narcissistic with our picks for the borough's best bath and body stores.

A good first stop is Carol's Daughter, a cozy store near Fort Greene Park specializing in products for African-American men and women. That said, people of all skin tones flock to the chain's Brooklyn outpost for Carol's top-notch scrubs, soaps and lotions. Scents range from fruity (Jamaican Punch) to soothing (Almond Cookie) and are available in nearly every form imaginable: body wash, candles, incense and hair care. Be sure to check out the store's beauty sets--especially the "Dogs are Talkin" pedicure set. 1 S. Elliot Pl.

Next, head to Natural Heights, an ecofriendly boutique in Prospect Heights that carries a cadre of beauty products among its other merchandise (stuff for baby, garden and home). Though the store carries many of the same brands found in co-ops, its friendly vibe and helpful staff make for a much more soothing shopping experience than the jam-packed three-level Union Square Whole Foods. Stock up on Earth Science Gentle Skin Peel ($15) and Jason Hydrating Night Crème ($23) to soothe your deathly winter complexion. 688 Washington Ave.

End your trip with a visit to Zoe's Beauty Products in Greenpoint. A combination spa/salon/beauty shop, Zoe's is a best bet when you're beauty-hunting for someone else. The staff can put together custom gift baskets catered to a giftee's beauty needs. When you're finished, treat yourself to an hour-plus facial. At just $65, Zoe's Vita Balance treatment for dry skin is a bargain compared to pricey Manhattan spas. 119 Greenpoint Ave.

Insider's Tip: Just paid rent and can't afford any of Brooklyn's boutique shops? We recommend taking a stroll along Nostrand and Flatbush avenues, where beauty shops line nearly every block. Most specialize in African-American hair care, but everyone can find hair or skin treatments that provide relief from winter dryness. When you're done, treat yourself to a Jamaican beef patty at Golden Krust--being vain is hard work. 568 Franklin Ave.
