Olympics Travel: Lights on at the Water Cube

Where: Beijing, China
January 28, 2008 at 5:00 PM | by pbb | 1 Comment

Beijing's National Aquatics Centre debuted today, as the city ramps ups its Olympics preparations. The giant boxy structure is covered in a translucent Teflon-like plastic that lets in natural light and cuts down on energy consumption. Pretty green for Beijing!

The China Open swimming contest will start this week, as both a sports event and a trial run for the facility. Nearby on what's known as the Olympic Green is Beijing National Stadium--aka the Bird's Nest--the iconic headquarters for the summer games.

The '08 Olympics start this summer on the auspicious date of August 8. And if you haven't made those travel plans yet, it's time to get to it.

    China's Aquatic Centre

Wow, that aquatic centre looks a million times cooler than the pool I swam at this morning, I think I would actually be inspired to do extra laps there! I saw a headline today that 75% of the Beijing tickets are still unsold? But it sounded like it was for more of the obscure sports. Perhaps the synchronized swimming still has seats available but gives you a chance to get inside this place ...
