The San Francisco Zoo is going to re-open tomorrow, nearly two weeks after a Siberian tiger escaped from her cage killing a 17-year-old boy and critically wounding two others. However, the outdoor tiger and lion exhibit will remain closed until better security barriers are constructed.

The zoo also said they have asked the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to make a site visit and give advice on an enhanced security barrier that will be built to protect both visitors and tigers. Additionally, the zoo is assembling a panel of other zoo directors to discuss more safety issues.

While the zoo has been closed to the public since the deadly incident, it did open on New Year's Day so that a couple could host their planned wedding reception there. The tiger and lion exhibit was of course off-limits.

In the meantime, the zoo will start the New Year with an Endangered Species Big Year Kick-Off Party on January 6 in which zoo visitors will hike around the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to learn about endangered species:

Join us for a hike to Ocean Beach to see western snowy plovers. Meet endangered species success stories like a Bald Eagle and Peregrine Falcon, as well as a Big Year species that still needs your help, North America's most beautiful serpent, the San Francisco Garter Snake.

The party is free and starts at 1 pm at the Bernard Osher Great Hall inside the zoo.

I don't know about you, but this story freaks me out more than a little bit. Sure the boys may have been teasing the tiger, but come on. Where was the staff? Why didn't they stop the boys?

And when it comes right down to it, that animal shouldn't have been able to get out - no matter how much it was provoked. Would a toddler throwing a temper tantrum or a preschooler throwing popcorn have provoked it? Would they have been at fault?

I know I'm ranting, but there's no excuse for this in my opinion. And I hope there's a huge investigation - http://www.gogirlfriend.com/travel-news/san-fran-zoo-reopen-during-tiger-investigation-4440
