The terminal is broken into two sections, neither of which is connected to the other. The main building is connected to the subway station underneath--the 2, 3, 4, 5, D, B, M, N, R, and LIRR trains that spill into the Atlantic Avenue stop--and upstairs you'll find Brooklyn's big-box shopping mecca: Target. Everyone knows what's inside Target, but most people don't know that the Brooklyn store frequently goes out of stock of many items on the weekends. Head there on a weekday after work to increase the likeliness that the store will carry your favorite brand of dish soap.
Next up: Daffy's. The city's answer to stores like T.J. Maxx, Daffy's stocks a mass of discounted clothes for men, women and children, as well as shoes and other accessories. Atlantic Avenue's Daffy's is often less picked-over than the store's other locations in NYC, and notably calmer.
While other familiar stores populate the terminal's main building, head over to the second building to take in the most out-of-control, hectic grocery store on the east coast: Pathmark. Sure, the store has other locations throughout the city, but the Atlantic Avenue Pathmark has what no other location does: Hundreds of angry, stressed-out customers careening down narrow aisles, employees who get on the intercom every ten seconds to announce/scream the specials and ungodly lines.
People talk a lot about Brooklyn's diverse ethnic and racial populations living side-by-side, and it's true, we do live next to one another. The best place to check it out? Atlantic Terminal Mall.
