Back in Time: Red Pompeii Pictures Turn Up in Rome

January 18, 2008 at 9:35 AM | 0 Comments

Right now at the National Museum of Rome, you've got the chance to see an amazing exhibition of frescoes recovered from under the dust at Pompeii. This artwork covered walls in public and private buildings across the city before Vesuvius erupted and buried them all a couple of millennia ago. After being removed for safekeeping in the 1700s, they've now been restored for all to see.

Some of the pictures show gallant scenes of battle and heroism, but others are simpler, like a still life of the contents of a kitchen pantry featuring dried fruits, mushrooms and an eel.

The exhibit is called Pompeii Red after the brilliant red color that's incredibly still preserved after all these centuries, and it runs through March 20. If you're young enough--it's meant to be for kids--you can also try your own hand at fresco painting while you're at the museum. And maybe your frescoes will be on display in another 2000 years: Get ready for the great exhibition of the year 4008.
