Tourist Trap: Attempting to See Animals In Night Zoo

September 5, 2007 at 3:00 PM | 1 Comment

Circus master and entrepreneur P.T. Barnum famously said, "There's a sucker born every minute." He meant it, too, cooking up pay-extra schemes like posting signs that read This Way to the Egress. (Once outside, you'd end up having to buy another ticket.)

We'd like to think Mr. Barnum is smiling down on us whenever a ridiculously expensive and underwhelming tourist attraction opens, wherever it is. With his penchant for animal attractions, he'd probably love this Singaporean "night zoo," where tourists pay through the nose to hear a charming British narrator describe the animals you can't see--because it's dark out!

In the zoo's defense, this could potentially have been a cool exhibit along the lines of the dark-house exhibit in your average zoo. But what's with the ridiculous narration? There's just no need for a special zoo for this. Head for the egress!

    Night Zoo

It's been a long time since I went to the Night Zoo in Singapore, but I am stunned by the difference between my experience and what you describe.  I thought it was amazing!  I had absolutely no trouble seeing the animals.  (And I don't remember the awful narrator, though I can believe she was there.)

It was like a miniature, urban version of the real safari in Africa which I took several years later.   The point of similarity was the ability to get close to animals living their lives with no cages.  I have recommended the experience to people ever since.
