Movie Set Travel: The Darjeeling Limited
Remember those life-altering family trips you took as a child? Cross-country drives or never-ending plane trips with not enough space between you and your brother? This week's pick, The Darjeeling Limited, is essentially a modern version of those.
Starring Owen Wilson (who's on the mend, yay!), Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman, and written by the awesome Wes Anderson, the film follows a trip across India by three brothers looking to reconnect. Of course they're thrown off course by all sorts of issues (Indian cough syrup, pepper spray) and end up in the desert with a random array of belongings and a whole new challenge.
This film was shot entirely in India, so, in that vein we offer you some great things to check out in-country.
Where To Stay: The Oberoi, Bombay -- Check into this sleek high-rise of a hotel for some seriously swank digs. Every single floor has its own butler and rooms feature spacious separate areas with traditional furniture. When booking, ask for one overlooking the Arabian Sea so you won't miss out on the view.
Where To Eat: Masala Art, Delhi -- Stop and eat at Masala Art, where you'll get a performance and a meal. Chefs reinvent typical Indian cuisine, and mealtime demonstrations yield crowd-pleasing fare. This could mean achari jhinga (prawns flavored with raw mango) or paneer makai bhurjee (soft cheese scrambled with corn and spices).
What to See: Marble Palace, Calcutta -- Built in 1855, this palace was the inspiration of a member of Bengal's landed gentry and features multiple levels with various exotic birds just wandering around. Marble inlay floors make it popular for film sets. To take a tour, you have to get a pass from West Bengal Tourist Office one day in advance.
