Southwest to Tweak Its Boarding Process

Southwest Airlines won't be assigning seats anytime soon, but the company is changing up its famous cattle call. Though the airline tested an assigned-seats boarding process two years ago, Southwest decided that was a bit too draconian. The new system will give passengers an order for boarding, but won't assign specific seats.
One immediate benefit is that passengers won't start lining up at the gate more than an hour before departure to get a prime spot in line. For now, boarding order will be determined by when you check in, which one airline analyst thinks is a great idea:
They've been doing something really well for a long time, which is get people on the airplanes real quick... It's an 'if it's not broke, don't fix it' kind of thing.
So now that Southwest has a handle on the order passengers board, could charges for preferential boarding be far behind?
