College Football Travel: By the Bayou with the LSU Tigers

Where: Stadium Dr [map], Baton Rouge, LA, United States, 70803

The college football season is in full swing, so where are the best road-trip worthy stadiums? We've got the teams, the games and the shenanigans covered on our College Football Travel map.

After last year's win at the Sugar Bowl--the first held in the post-Katrina Superdome--LSU is looking to make it another big season. The Tigers are ranked number 2 in the nation, thanks to an incredibly stingy defense anchored by tackle Glen Dorsey. With plenty of offensive weapons, too, LSU could win a National Championship this year--if it can beat some tough conference opponents.

LSU plays in Baton Rouge's 92,400-seat Tiger Stadium, a venue that once got so loud the campus seismograph registered the noise as an earthquake. Also known as Death Valley, the stadium hosts legendary night games, like one coming up against conference foe Florida on October 6.

The venue:
Tiger Stadium has the dubious distinction of having hosted the New Orleans Saints after Hurricane Katrina, but today it's an all-college arena. It also hosts one of the country's most rowdy pre-game atmospheres with students sliding through mud, racing around in shopping carts and dancing to crunk and electro music. The fact that LSU plays a lot of night games helps fuel the fun.

At the Stadium:
Tailgating at an SEC game is a given, and LSU's scene is up there with the best of them. (Look out for The Unsupervised Bus, a converted school bus full of Abita Beer.) But try not to get too rowdy, or you might end up like an LSU player: arrested. For something on the safer side, check out the Golden Band and Golden Girls hyping up the crowd before they enter the stadium for their rightly famous pre-game show.

Insider's Tip:
LSU has special NCAA permission to wear white jerseys at home games. But unless you're going to a game against an SEC opponent, stick to purple and gold--they don't wear white for anyone else.

Any Tiger travel agents out there?

An LSU fan wrote in to ask: "Do you have any packages for travel to the LSU versus Kentucky football game in October?" We don't, but maybe someone out there has some ideas?
