Volunteer Travel: You Don't Have to Get Your Hands Dirty

August 29, 2007 at 12:30 PM | 0 Comments

By 2050 (which, we realize is still a long ways away), more than 1.5 billion people will have traveled to the developing world to do more than just get their passports stamped: They're going to help others. But you can lend a hand without shedding your blood, sweat and tears. Interesting options are now available for almost everyone--including those who prefer luxury to latrines. Our faves, after the jump.

In Mozambique, travelers who stay at the Nkwichi Safari Lodge are directly supporting locals. There are just 14 beds at this luxury camp, which is located along the largest body of freshwater in the country. Fees support the staff and their extended families. And long-term guests can work on game reserve conservation projects or help build schools and dig wells.

Travelers visiting Ulpotha, Sri Lanka can volunteer at the free ayurvedic clinic while staying at one of the world's premier yoga destinations. After a long day of downward dogs, guests can dispense traditional medicines to villagers, work in local schools for the handicapped or assist with language therapy groups.

Who would have ever thought that staying in a spa would equate to making the world a better place? The Sile Evason Hideaway & Spa in Ko Samui, Thailand is part of the UNESCO-supported Restaurants Against Hunger, which means ordering off the delicious menu of light cuisine helps stop famine around the world. And guests can travel to local markets to buy directly from villagers with members of the spa's staff through the LIFE program, which helps promote local sustainable business.
