Car Factory Tours: The Real Benz Tour

August 29, 2007 at 2:45 PM | by | Comment (1)

What's up with factories being totally geographically divorced from their high tech visitor centers? Don't get us wrong, we're not saying that the brand new Mercedes-Benz Museum is an insufficient tribute to the cars: With eight great levels of automotive fun all wrapped up in a gleaming metal shell that evokes an engine block, what's not to like? But for those who need a firsthand look at how a Benz comes together, a haul out to the Stuttgart suburb of Sindelfingen is in order.

The Mercedes European Delivery Center (read: car factory) offers a 90 minute guided tour every weekday. A crowd-pleasing mix of video car porn, crisply delivered factoids about Mercedes' storied past and close encounters with sensitive robots, it's all designed to provoke an intense desire for anything with a motor and a three-legged peace sign on the front.

Four tours a day are conducted in English for those more familiar with German engineering than the German language. Tour reservations can be made by phone--much more convenient than the schmoozing with a local luxury car dealer that is required to gawk at the insides of the neighboring Porsche factory.

Be forewarned though: While the free coffee and immaculate public restrooms may seem like backpacker's heaven, a good number of the other people taking the tour are there to pick up their new ride. Those with driver envy might want to sit this one out.

I was just visiting a few car dealer websites when I found your article here. If I ever travel to Germany in the Stuttgart area, the Mercedes Benz car factory will surely be on my visiting list. Hope I actually manage to go there one day soon.
