Tourist Trap: The Cheers Restaurant

August 15, 2007 at 3:39 PM | 3 Comments

In a city full of authentic, extant sites from important junctures in American history, people still flock to Boston's Cheers, the restaurant that inspired the hit series. Now, we're no strangers to TV travel, but let us be clear: This is not a real pub where everybody knows your name. Maybe it "inspired" the show, but the interiors for the comedy were shot in Hollywood, and bear no resemblance to this pub. Nor does Frasier hang out there.

We'll take you to a real pub like Grendel's Den, and we'll buy you three beers for the price of one Cheer-beer. If you really want to see the famed exterior of the "Cheers" pub, this video gives you all you need, including the famous theme song.

    Wrong inspiration

The pub that inspired the "Cheers" TV is the Bull and Finch Pub on Beacon Hill in Boston, where the show's exterior shots were filmed. The Cheers chain cashed in on the TV show's popularity (perhaps even named themselves after the show, not vice versa) -- much in the same way as Mystic Pizza in Mystic, Connecticut, has done. While vacationing writer Amy Jones was supposedly inspired by the pizzeria to write her story, I find it impossible to believe that she was inspired by the pizza. At the time the movie came out, we locals laughed at the depiction of the heavely pizza -- it was truly inedible! The family that owns the pizzeria has definitely benefited from the publicity, and while the pizza has improved significantly, it would never be considered "a slice of heaven" by anyone who knows good pizza. The place is always packed, though -- probably with the same people who go to Cheers!
