The TSA Way: Bics Are Back

July 31, 2007 at 5:23 PM | by | Comment (1)

Lighters are banned OK, the 3-1-1 standard for liquids, torch lighters are still banned -- no doubt the TSA has a very difficult job, but what you can and can't bring on board an aircraft is getting harder and harder to understand.

The TSA collects more than 22,000 lighters a day, which represents a high percentage of the daily confiscated items at airports around the country, and as of this coming Saturday, the ban on common lighters will be lifted. The company line is that the TSA wants to free up resources to focus more on detecting explosives. Take it away Kip:

By enabling our officers to focus on the greatest threats we are using our officers' time and energy more effectively and increasing security for passengers.

Does this jive with 3-1-1?

So if lighter fluid is a fluid (right?), does your lighter have to be in your little quart-sized liquid baggie? And if not, does that mean that toothpaste is more deadly than a liquid whose sole purpose is to catch on fire?
