When the first family of New Orleans restaurants opens a new place, you pretty much have to check it out. So a friend and I went over to the Loews New Orleans Hotel to have lunch at Cafe Adelaide. Since it's run by the Brennan clan--of Commander's Palace fame--I knew I'd have fun, I just didn't realize how much.
As we walked up to the restaurant, Chef Danny Trace was hanging out, talking with his staff at the host stand. After making a little small talk with him, my friend and I were whisked back to a table and tucked into a crab and corn amuse. That's when I noticed that the martinis at lunch sell for 25 cents. Seriously. One quarter will get you a martini. As the menu says, "Who knew a power lunch could be so much fun?"
After looking over the rest of the menu, we opted for the Coolinary Summer Menu, a special three-course lunch that goes for $20.07. It starts with gumbo before moving on to an entree and then dessert.
Just as we were getting to our mains--fried catfish with cornbread and a sort-of creole slaw--a "trouble tree" came over to our table. That's it above: two sidecars and two Adelaide swizzles. Now, I was already having plenty of "fun" thanks to that martini, but when the chef sends something over to your table, you don't turn it down. Thankfully, our dessert--a richer than rich creole cheesecake--went with the beverages quite nicely.
