Pinkberry Update: Expert Weighs In On Powdery Substance

After we put out the call to have our burning questions about the secret ingredient in the dessert dished by L.A. and N.Y.C. chain Pinkberry, one expert shared his thoughts with us.

A Jaunted reader, who would rather remain anonymous, used to be in the frozen yogurt business himself in the 1970s, an experience he described as, "Fun, but we ate all the profits behind the counter... I tried the Pinkberry and loved it actually, hence my extreme disappointment when I learned..."

READ ALL ABOUT IT!

According to our tipster, who wishes to remain unnamed--take it for what it is worth:

Pinkberry frozen powdered desert is, alas, not yogurt. It is a sweet powder like the Orange Julius powder mix (however with artificial sweetener I believe) combined with water or milk. It tastes like yogurt but so does imitation banana flavor, for example, taste like bananas.

On why Pinkberry is so profitable:

Powdered mixes cost much less to buy and to prepare than yogurt which is made in a dairy under the safest of sanitary conditions... The costs associated with real yogurt, which is shipped in from the dairy and must be discarded if not sold from the machine within 24 hours, are eliminated with the Pinkberry model just as, of course, the actual yogurt is eliminated as well. Powdered mixes can virtually be stored forever. They charge the same as the yogurt shops or more with a fraction of the perishable product-based expenses.

On the Y-word:

I was truly disappointed by the misleading advertising by the owners who had to know Pinkberry was not yogurt all along. It tasted good, but I surely thought I was getting the benefits of real yogurt with the same taste and not a powdered dessert mix instead... The Pinkberry powdered desert mix is edible and tasty but just not worth the price of yogurt and, of course, should never be referred to as yogurt.

So what's to be done?

Many true frozen yogurt shops such as Angelina's in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills have now added a "naturale" flavor, which is just as tart and refreshing as the Pinkberry frozen powdered dessert but is real yogurt with whatever natural organic benefits real yogurt has had for years. With "Naturale" flavor when you add the same toppings as at Pinkberry you get real yogurt and the same taste for the same basic price which is a much better value.

Bummer. Well, the lady at the counter recognized me last time I went into my local Pinkberry so I have to go back to Tasti anyway. Being recognized at a place where the line is around the block every day is just shameful.

Does anyone really believe this? (none / 0)

I'm so disappointed with you Jaunted. Anyone who even has a vague idea of what's going on in the froyo world knows that this 'expert' doesn't have a clue.

If you read the original article from the LA Times, Pinkberry claimed that they made their froyo with real yogurt from the start. The only catch was that the Government wanted it to be mixed at a dairy instead of the store - a legal technicality, nothing more.  They just did a second article testing for yogurt bacteria and found plenty of it.  Even if you go into the store and ask, they'll tell you it's made with real yogurt.  But I guess that's not as much fun as letting socalled experts with their head up their arse blather on.  Interesting that he plugs an obscure yogurt shop that no one else seems to be talking about.  Whatever to him.

Maybe he does have a hidden agenda, but he definitely knows his yogurt--don't you think?  Stay tuned.  We talked to a Pinkberry rep yesterday, and will be publishing her response soon.

Where the yogurt is mixed isn't a "legal technicality," it's a Department of Health issue -- and I'm not a very adventurous consumer, so I like to know that the places I visit are in compliance, even if it's just compliance in name.

Also, I should have clarified this, but our expert doesn't have any financial interest in any yogurt shops... don't worry, we checked.
