Best Local Travel Blogs: San Fran's Weekend Sherpa

July 20, 2007 at 10:22 AM | 2 Comments

Of course, we think Jaunted is the best travel blog out there. However, there are some great resources out there to help with very specific travel needs. Some sites focus exclusively on one city, making it an online manual to all things ________ (fill in your hometown). We hear from our San Francisco based tipsters that they wouldn't be able to make plans without the life coaching of Weekend Sherpa.

The site tries to offer the convenience of the web with the aesthetics of a handwritten guidebook. Each week, editors focus on a different, timely theme, and structure activity recommendations around it. This week, the guide tells readers, in honor of some bike race in France, where in NoCal they can pedal on two wheels.

    Weekend Sherpa fan

I LOVE Weekend Sherpa!  I'm so glad you discovered it too.  Now if only they'd start one in DC.

    Weekend Sherpa Rocks!

My wife and I used Weekend Sherpa on many occasions.  What we like about Sherpa is the research they do - finding places we have never heard about (ex: old mines in the East Bay?) - and keeping the selections to only the best.  Very smart!

Sherpa goes beyond simply providing a list of destinations like any other site - they turn it into an adventure.  Sherpa has a story to each adventure - meet the owners, learn about some local history, something that brings a personal meaning to the adventure.  When they covered Mavericks - how to best watch the contest - Sherpa interview Jeff Clark - so the have access to the best sources. I recall one hideaway we plan on doing soon - requires a five mile snow shoe/bike/hike (depends on the season) from the road to get to the comfy lodge - the lodge sends an ATV to carry your luggage - you simply hike it five miles - now that is a real hideaway adventure!
