Box Jellyfish Invade Oahu Waters

July 13, 2007 at 8:36 AM | by GoVisitHawaii | 5 Comments

West Oahu is experiencing a box jellyfish invasion. Lifeguards say they normally count about 40 box jellyfish on the western shore, but Wednesday they counted over 500.

The box jellyfish's sting attacks the heart, nervous system and skin cells. Stings are so powerful that victims have been known to go into shock and die of heart failure before they even have the chance to reach the shore.

The pale blue creatures routinely appear eight to 12 days after a full moon. Lifeguards will warn the public if there have been sightings. As of Thursday, Oahu's west and south shores are under a box jellyfish advisory. To find out the current beach safety conditions, consult the official Hawaii beach safety guide.

    Missed sandwich opportunity

Why is it that the peanut butter fish is never around at the same time when the jellyfish is?

    Aren't you suppose to...

urinate on a jellyfish sting?  Or is that a snake bite.  I remember in Sydney they had jellyfish sting washes of some sort up at the head of the beach, but I can't remember what they consisted of.

Luckily, The Onion is dispensing advice on summer hazards:

"problem: Jellyfish stings and coral scrapes

solution: Always carry a gun with you when you swim, If you see jellyfish or coral while you are in the ocean, shoot them immediately."

Thanks for sharing this post. You can find jelyfish in Phang Na, Koh Mak. Great Barrier in Australia which is a prime tourist magnet is closed for swimming during the months from November and May due to this menace with some places having special safety nets that are kept open. There are many beaches like north Catalonia beaches, Ala Moana Beaches in Hawaii, Oahu beaches. For more detail refer beach
