When a friend took us to dinner last night at Blowfish Sushi we honestly thought it was just another cleverly-named sushi joint in a strip mall in Hollywood. But when we told our other friends that we were checking out Blowfish Sushi, they said, "Oooh, that place is supposed to be cool."
Indeed, it's not just another strip mall sushi joint. But those looking for a traditional sushi dinner won't find that here either. Blowfish Sushi is more an Asian fusion restaurant which is pleasing for those who can't (or won't) eat raw fish. It's also a small chain with spots in San Jose, San Francisco, and Auckland, New Zealand.
MORE
The decor is more nightclub/lounge than restaurant with black leather seats and Japanime playing on small tv screens throughout. There is the traditional sushi counter however and each table has a bamboo look. Whether it's real bamboo or not, we can't say.
We sampled the vegetable tempura and miso soup which were pretty standard. Tasty but nothing amazing. Then we tried out the Shishito peppers($9) which we were expecting to be stuffed with some goodies and no more than 5 of them. Instead we were served about 20 oil-drenched peppers.
For the main course, we ordered the pricey Punch entree ($33), a chef's selection that feature pieces of filet mignon wrapped in a potato canister of sorts with spinach underneath. Now, this was delicious. And since we have an aversion to fish, we didn't sample any of the sushi although our friend had the Uni roll which she loved.

Then we followed all that up with the Sweet Zen Garden dessert which included green tea ice cream and green tea cheesecake made with green tea powder. There was also an almond cream spread on the plate which made the cheesecake taste a thousand times better. It was too much green tea than we would normally like but maybe it helped our immune system.
The only real disappointment of Blowfish Sushi is that they don't actually serve the poisonous blowfish, although the head chef is apparently licensed to serve it. That would just add to the spot's "cool factor." Not like we would eat it of course.
As for the service, we had a mild crush on our server who was always smiling and the bartender and host were friendly as well. The place has a back room that can be rented out for events, complete with a DJ who spins tunes whether there is a party or not.
And as always in Hollywood, people wanna know if celebs have visited the place at all. We heard about Jamie Foxx and Fergie but we got our own celeb-sighting---Tori Spelling's little brother, Randy, dined at the sushi counter. Hey, it was a Wednesday night.
