Russia Hires Robocop To Keep Visitors Safe

June 27, 2007 at 8:54 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

The Russians have a few unusual ideas when it comes to tackling social problems: just take those fake beggars they hired to talk addicted gamblers out of going into the casinos in Moscow. But further east in the city of Perm, they're going all hi-tech with the introduction of R BOT 001.

Yep, R BOT 001, or Robocop as the newspapers have dubbed him, is a mechanical police officer whose shape makes him "impossible to manhandle". He patrols Perm streets telling drinkers to take their alcohol indoors and providing help to passersby in the form of a panic button. The idea is that a monotone repeating an instruction will have some effect on petty offenders. Not sure if he speaks English though, so keep your Russian to English translation book handy.
