Embedded Travel Guides: We are searching the world for folks who can take you on a field trip of their "backyard." When we find these folks, we then stealthy embed them into their local travel scene and ask them to be our eyes and ears out in the field.
We are expecting the same sort of grainy video, choppy sentences, and snapshot photos that you are use to seeing from embeds. The rub is, at the end of the day we should be left with a backyard travel guidebook like no other.
Every couple of years, give or take, I tell my wife to put on her dancing shoes and I take her to one of BA's many spiffy discotheques where we have an absolutely marvelous time, um, tearing up the dance floor to the fat beats mashed up by the disk jockey in his booth. Last night, after noticing the year had an odd number in it, we did just that. We attended a nightclub.
The party that had the honor of receiving us was Zizek, the hippest night in town at the moment. You can catch it every Wednesday at Niceto Club.
It was great. There was electronica to jump around to. There were strange and trippy visuals on the back wall. There were people smoking long cigarettes that they very kindly shared around. But at this point my vocabulary fails me. Like R2D2, I know I have an important message to deliver but I either need a good bang on the head or the right person to put my vague impressions into the appropriate street argot. So I asked my good pal Grant Dull -- one of the DJs and organisers -- to help me out. Over to Grant.
There's something happening in the underground BA club scene, a transformation of ideas, styles and rhythms . Buenos Aires is returning to its roots. What's fresh is that after years of looking to Europe for inspiration and sounds, BA's hippest beat makers are now looking to places like Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and right here in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Cumbia, Reggaeton, Dancehall and Hip Hop en Español are elbowing their way into the clubs with serious attitude. The "Paris of the South" has changed. Now it is just simply Buenos Aires, Argentina, Latin America. And it's off the hook.
Where to catch all these DJs? Zizek, Wednesday nights at Niceto Club. Other gigs around town as the genre grows. And of course, Myspaceando.
That make sense to you, kids? Jolly good.
One thing to remember. Like all club nights in BA, Zizek doesn't get going until around 2 or 3 in the morning so you should, er, drink plenty of strong coffee before you go.
