Peter Greenberg Pays Dearly For His Excess Baggage

Peter Greenberg was back on NBC's Today Show this morning, letting us in on his recent troubles with a couple of European low cost carriers. He outed EasyJet and Ryanair as skyway robber barons--airlines charging small amounts of money for airfare, but then jacking up the cost for extra charges buried deep in the contract of carriage once you get to the airport.

Greenberg calls out skyway robber airlines here.

Example number one--Greenberg ended up paying $516.00 for a 38 minute flight from Paris to London in baggage fees alone, forget about the thirty something dollars he paid for the actual flight.

Greenberg arrived at the airport expecting to pay extra for his second bag, but was rightfully floored when EZJet charged him not per bag, but for every kilo over their 20 kilo limit (44lbs).

Also mentioned in the "skyway robber" category, popular RyanAir.

Checking the Ryanair contract of carriage we found this:

Any passenger checking in baggage exceeding the 15kg checked baggage allowance per person will be charged an excess baggage fee currently at a rate of £5.50/€8 per kilo (or local currency equivalent)

That is almost $11 per kilo over 15kgs, yikes. LCCs are the new 900 numbers.

Peter didn't just helpfully expose the airlines this morning, he also let us in on a couple hotels in Arizona with hidden charges. HotelChatter has the lowdown on Peter's recent hotel billing issues.
