WTF is Pantelleria

Where: Italy

Welcome to Where To Find, our growing guide to those little-known places that never seem to show up on the travel radar--until now. We're not saying they're undiscovered, but you may need to look 'em up on our WTF Map.

Floating in the Mediterranean, Pantelleria is a rocky island closer to Africa than Italy. It's technically in Sicily--which some might claim barely makes it part of Italy anyway. You can get there by boat or by air from Trapani, on the western edge of Sicily.

But what to do once you're there? You'll want to check out the dammusi, classic stone houses built low to the ground to fight off the heat of the Mediterranean sun. If you want to go native, try renting one for your stay. (You'll probably need to speak--or know a friend who speaks!--some Italian to do this.)

After checking in and taking a dip in your pool, strap on the hiking boots. Pantelleria is volcanic to its core, which means you'll find photography friendly scenery and lots of nice trails to conquer. The nature preserve on the interior of the island is your best bet for scoping flora and fauna, while the Mirror of Venus lake is perfect for a soak after a long day. After that, all that's left to do is pop open a bottle of passito and enjoy the sunset.

stone houses

I want to stay in one of these damussi.  They look like houses for Mediterranean hobbits.

If you love hobbit homes, you'll love the Woodlyn Park hotel in New Zealand.

Very cool!  And close to the glow-worm caves, another place I want to go.
